CORK is safe for people and the environment
Leather tanning today is a toxic, deadly process that includes highly dangerous substances like formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and various oils, dyes, and finishes—some of them cyanide-based. As a result, the water table and environment becomes highly polluted and the people working with these products often become terminally illl. Most US and European countries have discontinued leather tanning and shipped the deadly work to poorer countries.
On the other hand, cork is harvested in a renewable and sustainable way that does not hurt the trees, the environment or the people working with them. Every seven years, the trees regenerate their bark and can be harvested throughout their lifetime of 170 – 250 years.
